Fresh ‘N Rebel Rockbox Bold X Review
It’s the first time I’ve come across Fresh N Rebel and they manufacture Bluetooth speakers, headphones, power banks and cables. On paper, they appear to offer a quality looking product, at a reasonable price. They sent over their Rockbox Bold X for us to try out.
Fresh N Rebel has several speakers under their Rockbox Bold range, offering different sizes, shapes, prices and performance. The X is the largest of its sort and the second largest overall in the range. It retails at £79.99 and it comes in a variety of colours. It’s also waterproof IPX7, which means it can be fully submerged in upto 1m of water.
The Bold X is a fairly flat speaker, which initially gave me concerns as although some flatter speakers sound ok, many do not. It’s constructed from plastic, although it has soft foamy sections to the front & back, it’s lightweight, it’s handheld but also has a handle for carrying with a single finger or attaching to a bag etc. The speaker comes in a variety of pastel colours, including grey, green, pink, blue, red and black.
To the front of the speaker are three pushbuttons for playing/pausing and changing tracks and/or volume. To the right-hand side are two more buttons, power on/off and Bluetooth connect. Between those two buttons is a rubber cover, which underneath gives access to the micro USB port for charging and a 3.5mm aux in. The speaker sits slightly proud off any surface thanks to slim rubber feet.
I like the design, I like how it’s been constructed and it’s got that premium feel to it. The package the speaker comes is good quality too and includes a USB cable, aux cable and a carry clip, so you can attach it to your bag straight away.
The sound quality is better than I expected. It’s clear and it’s loud, which is what you want when you’re by the pool or out and about. It does lack in the low end and if you plan on only using this in your room, there is potential to get something better suited for indoors, for around the same price. All in all, I listened to a variety of tracks and it was very enjoyable.
If you wanted to step it up a notch, you can actually pair two of these together, which will then offer a stereo set up. I know from experience, it can make a lot of difference but then you’re looking at double the cost. The battery life is also good, it was roughly 7-8 hours before having to charge again and charging time was about 90 minutes I believe.
The speaker is IPX7 rated, meaning it can survive in up to 1m of water for up to 30 minutes. That being said, there is no benefit from putting the speaker in say a swimming pool, the quality diminishes considerably and if that access flap isn’t secure, I’d be worried the speaker will get damaged. That being said, it’s great that you don’t need to worry about it if it fell in some water accidentally or got left outside during a downpour.
It also feels fairly robust and will withstand a few knocks. However, that cushioned fabric will easily get marked but you could always put it under the tap to try and scrub it off.
Overall, quite impressed with the Fresh ‘N’ Rebel Rockbox Bold X. It’s well built, it’s easy to carry, it sounds good and it’s fit for purpose. If you need a speaker while travelling, you wouldn’t be disappointed with this.
