LIFX Smart Lamp Review
If you’ve read some of our other articles, we have reviewed a couple of ‘smart’ lamps now. It just shows the market is growing and expanding into the digital age. Who’s the latest to join the party? LIFX, who are apparently the makers of the world’s brightest colour WiFi smart lamp. They have four different lamps available to purchase right now, two white, with different lumen outputs and two colour changing lamps , with different lumen outputs. We got sent the Colour 1000 to check out!
The LIFX Colour 1000 is the smaller of the two colour changing lamps and has been designed to fit even more light fittings than its brother, which is slightly large is size and shape. The lamp is of course LED, which is the most energy-efficient vs light quality/output light source on the market right now. It has an advertised lumen output of 1055 lumens, which should give out plenty of light. It is colour changing and boasts millions of potential colours, including 1000 shades of white. The lamp is WiFi enabled, which means it can be controlled remotely via an app. Ok so the spec looks good! Its time to plug it in and see if it lives up to the claims.
The lamp feels of a good quality, it’s a good size and shape and feels robust. Light is projected from the top, but also a little leaks from the sides which is nice. It gives it a feel of a traditional filament lamp. The lamps come in different holder variants, i.e I had the Edison screw version, but a bayonet version is available. It’s bright! Like really bright! It has a light output of 1055 lumens, which is more than enough for many applications around your home. At full brightness, it uses 11w of power, which is very efficient when it comes to power consumed vs light output.
The lamp is WiFi enabled, meaning it can be controlled via an app on your smart device. It’s easily set up. First you download the free app, connect the lamp, turn it on at the mains and follow the instructions on the app. Very easy, hassle free. Once I was connected, the fun began! There are several options within the app but the four key ones are Colours, Whites, Themes and Effects. Under each of these options, you are able to change how the lamp works. As you may expect by the titles, colour allows you to select any colour you want for the palate on-screen. Whites allow you to select from hundreds of different whites, from warm white to cool white. Themes allow you to select pre selected settings, based on your mood and effects allows you to have a bit of fun! The app looks great, is very easy to use and very responsive. As the lamp is WiFi enabled, it can be controlled remotely.
A super neat feature that I have not seen before is that the lamps connect to other smart home devices, such as Nest, Samsung Smart Things and Logitech Harmony. Unfortunately I don’t have any of these smart products to hand to test with but the idea behind it is brilliant. For example, if Nest Protect detects smoke or carbon monoxide, LIFX lamps can flash red to let you know there might be danger and help signal those who are hearing impaired. Another brilliant example for when you go away on holiday, as soon as your Nest Thermostat switches itself into Away Mode, LIFX can make it look as if someone’s home by automatically turning on and off your lights throughout the house. This is genius, having the smart products in your home, communicating with each other and in theory, protecting and running your home for you. That’s the future right there!
There are a bunch of awesome features with this lamp and it I have to say, this is by far the most intelligent and powerful smart lamp I have tested to date. It retails for £59.99 and at that price, you got to love it! For further info and to purchase, visit the official LIFX website.
