British actor Idris Elba has just broken the “Flying Mile” speed record.

It was set during filming for his new Discovery Channel show Idris Elba: No Limits. The Golden Globe winning actor managed to achieve an average speed of 180.361mph. He was driving a Bentley Continental GT. The feat took place at Pendine Sands. The beach is located on the south coast of Wales.

The achievement was verified by the UK Timing Association.

Idris said: “I’m absolutely elated to have broken the ‘Flying Mile’ at Pendine Sands. It’s an honour to have taken on the challenge, and to successfully follow in the footsteps of the illustrious Sir Malcolm Campbell.”

Sir Malcom Cambell held the record at 174.8mph in his legendary Bluebird vehicle and remained his for nearly 90 years.

Idris Elba: No Limits sees the actor push his mind and body in a number of competitive speed challenges which include drag racing, rally driving and aerobatics in a four-part series airing on the Discovery Channel this summer.
