This is the Legee D8 from Hobot. It’s a robot vacuum cleaner, with a built in mop feature, and unlike other cleaners we’ve tried in the past, it actually does a pretty good job.

The cleaner currently retails for £599 here in the UK, so it’s certainly an investment and you need happy that it meets your needs and works in your home.

In the box, you get the cleaner itself, plus a charging dock, where the cleaner meets the dock, automatically placing itself on top of two metal conductors, used for charging the cleaner’s internal battery. You also get a water bottle used for filling the water tank up, the power adapter, a sweeping brush and some instructions.

Working around the cleaner, it’s got several proximity sensors around the exterior, picking up objects, walls, and items on the floor, preventing it from hitting them. Which it does quite a good job and to overcome an obstacle, it will reverse, move, sense, and continue to do so until the obstacle is no longer in the way.

To manoeuvre, it has two powered, rubber continuous tracks, or wheels, similar to those found on a tank, plus a free-moving wheel to the front.  This allows for a good amount of grip, ensuring it can travel on a variety of floor finishes. Each track also travels up and down, a suspension-like system, allowing the cleaner to travel over obstacles up to 20mm in height, such as a door threshold or a rug on solid flooring.

Under the hood, there is a small water tank and a rubbish collector. The water tank is filled up via the provided water bottle, and it’s a matter of filling with water and or cleaning solution, then if the mop setting is used, this liquid is slowly released, cleaning the floor. The rubbish collector can be removed and emptied out in your rubbish bin very easily. The filter can also be cleaned or overtime, replaced. Also under the hood is a handy tool, with a brush at one end, and a covered blade at the other. This can be used to cut away any long hair or other string-like materials stuck in the cleaner.

In terms of features, It’s a 4 in 1 cleaner, it will vacuum, sweep, spray water and mop. It has 7 modes, standard, power suction, ECO, deep clean, custom, dry, stain and tangless. It’s got an innovative compacting system, where the cleaner is designed to compact and compress the rubbish collected during the cleaning process. By doing this, the tank can hold more rubbish, reducing the amount of times you need to empty it in the bin yourself.

It’s controlled via an app, and the cleaner will connect to your home network, allowing you to control it from anywhere. The cleaner works on a navigation-based system and it’s starting point is the docking station. From here, the cleaner will work its way around your room, mapping where it’s been, and creating a virtual floorplan, which can be viewed via the app. You can also manually map rooms if desired. The cleaner does a great job of mapping a room, or rooms. However, if you move the docking station, the cleaner will get lost, it will not be able to return to it and will lose it’s sense of direction.

The app allows you to fully control the cleaner. It allows you to select cleaning options. It shows you whether the water tank is full, or whether the rubbish contactor is full and needs emptying. It allows you to schedule cleans, so you can leave your home, come back and your floor has been cleaned and mopped.

Overall the cleaner works very well on both wood and carpet. It does a great job of ensuring it cleans the entire room available, including under sofas. It collects all rubbish, it tackled hair from my dog and crumbs from my kids, without an issue. It also mopped, you can visually see the wet area it leaves behind it as it goes up and down. The app works well, it’s easy to use but you need to ensure this will work for you. Cleaning on the carpet, I noticed it filled the dirt container alot quicker and I had to empty it more often. For me, it doesn’t quite work with my floorplan, as I have three different levels, with steps that the cleaner cannot tackle. So it will be great for one room, but not the other. Also, bare in mind that everytime you move the dock, you need to adjust the map or let the cleaner re-map the space for you.
