We get a lot of emails, and every so often, there is a piece of tech that sounds interesting and this is one of those instances. HiMirror got in touch about their new Mini Premium smart mirror, which got me intrigued straight away. It’s a mirror though, specifically designed to help with your skincare. I’m 29, male and not overly concerned about my appearance, but I told my wife about this new product and she was keen to try out, so I handed it over to her to try out for a week or two and below is the feedback I got.

What’s in the box:

Set up was very straightforward, with nothing too strenuous. Take the mirror out the box, plug it in, push & hold the power button and wait for the mirror to boot up. Essentially, the mirror has a 10″ tablet built in behind the screen, running on Android OS. When you first use the mirror, you need to set it up, just like you would with a tablet and select various options, connect it to your local WiFi and create an account. To log into your account, it uses face recognition via the camera.

When the mirror is turned on, there are various options and functions available to you. These can be selected by using the stylus provided and tapping various buttons on the mirror. There are quick buttons on the ‘home screen’, such as a button allowing you to turn the screen off, to leave just the mirror and options for lighting. There is one linear LED light either side of the screen, which can be adjusted to suit your environment (output/colour temperature). It’s very easy to select and browse the options.

The key USP for this mirror is the skin analyser, which analyses your skin, with the goal of helping you improve your skin condition. There is a camera located at the top of the mirror, which does open & close if you’re concerned about your privacy, and it is used to scan your face as & when you choose. The camera takes a photo, stores it, along with measurement data, which allows the mirror to track your skin quality over a period of time. It assesses your skin for wrinkles, fine lines, dark circles, dark spots, red spots, roughness and pores. By assessing this information on a daily basis, it allows you to try different products, methods, and track any improvements, to obtain the result you want. Other features include skincare product manager, where you can scan the products you use, to track their performance etc. The system can also recommend products that may help improve your skin, it has a built-in magnifier, as well as being a social media device. Yes, you can play music via Spotify, while you browse Facebook, YouTube or Instagram for the latest tutorial.

The mirror itself, used as a mirror, is very high quality and with the addition of the adjustable lighting, it makes it great for applying your make up. The analyser works on percentages, increases & decreases against the last measurement, which is a great way to monitor changes when trying out new products. The beauty box option is a great way to check the effectiveness of your makeup, you can measure your skin before and after using each product to see the difference each product makes.

There were a couple of cons I found while using the mirror. The first being, when using the skin analyser the mirror must remain in the same position in the exact same lighting for it to get an accurate measurement to log the effectiveness of a product. It’s also difficult to log a product into the system if it doesn’t have a barcode for it. Lastly, to get the most out of the mirror, you need to purchase additional services, such as The Hi skin, body, and fitness options which is an increased cost.

Overall, the mirror was great to use and the quality is top notch. This is the future of mirrors! The mirror retails at £239 and can be purchased now. For more information, visit the official HiMirror website.
