If you’ve been following us on our socials or watched a recent video, you will know Stef and myself are at this years CES. We’ve just been wandering around the convention centre and stumbled across the guys at SJcam and they had plenty to look at.
It’s been a while since we’ve used or even looked at SJC but they have been working hard and on paper, it appears to be paying off. Their latest additions to their action cam line up are the SJ10 Pro Action and Max Action.
The best part about the SJ10 Pro? It does not require a case. Yes, you heard right, the case has gone and the camera housing is fully waterproof and pressure tested for water depths of up to 10 meters.
The camera includes a Sony IMX377 sensor, capable of recording up to 4K 60fps and taking still images up to 12mega pixels. There is also an 8 times digital zoom and supersmooth image stabilisation. Now how well that image stabilisation will be is yet to be decided but they have a tough time ahead when compared with the newer Go Pro cams and the DJI Osmo Action.
At the rear of the camera is a 2.33″ IPS touch screen display, which has an Ultra HD resolution. There is also a 1300mAh removable battery, it can connect to 2.4 and 5ghz wireless networks and it offers live mode as an option. Audio performance should be good as there are dual stereo microphones, plus, you can plug in an external microphone but from what we know, this is currently limited to SJcam microphones only which they are developing.
From looking at the packaging, it would appear the cam will come with a few additional items, including the frame, base and curve mounts, plus associated 3M stickers, plus a USB cable and a screw.
Now when we discussed price, we were told it was still to be confirmed but it was going to be around the $249 dollar mark. At that price point, it’s really got to work hard to compete with Go Pro and DJI. Will they do? I’m not sure they will but I’m optimistic and very much looking forward to trying one out.
Release date is TBC as they are still ironing out the price and promotion side of things but it appears it will be available Q1 of this year. What I’m slightly baffled by is that their SJ9 cam is still up for pre order, so may not be available to purchase in stores and yet they want to release the SJ10 before the end of Q1. We will have to see how this pans out…
