Top technolgy research firm Gartner predicted that Apple’s worldwide market share would last until 2015. Although that is not the case anymore, new figures show that Android have taken a huge lead up to 62 percent, close to doubling that of iOS with 36 percent.

The shift in worldwide sales is due to an increased demand for smaller, lower cost tablets. Gartner said. Tablet sales for the whole industry grew by 145 percent across emerging markets, compared with 31 percent in mature markets. This is understandable with the amount of “white-box” products from off-brand manufacturers jumping onto our screens.

In 2013, Tablets became a mainstream phenomenon, with a vast choice of Android based tablets being within the budget of mainstream consumers while still offering adequate specifications,” Gartner research director Roberta Cozza said in a statement.

Samsung have also had a increase in market share with a 336 percent increase over last year bringing 2013 figures to 19 percent over a mere 7.4 percent in 2012.
