It’s strange that a car manufacturer like Ford turned up for a congress that’s focused on mobile technology, but it makes sense. Trust me.

Vodafone, one of the world’s leading mobile phone contract provider has teamed up with the car company to install modems into their cars giving drivers and passengers 4G connectivity. This feat is called the FordPass Connect, and will let Ford owners browse the world wide web when out and about.

The service will also include an app from Ford which will let drivers know where their car is anywhere in the world, and even remote lock and unlock it at a distance. Ever been in a position where a cat has jumped on your bonnet while it’s sitting on the drive and set the alarm off? Now you will be able to remotely shut it down without having to leave the comfort of your sofa. The app will also let drivers check on their car vitals such as oil levels, how much battery life is left and an odometer.

More obviously, the service will give you live traffic updates as well as a journey planner Sat Nav type technology to speed up your journeys. All of this technology will work over a WiFi signal, so no Bluetooth will be required. It will even send a signal to the emergency services when the car detects that it’s been in a crash thanks to the new Sync connectivity system.

Okay, so this technology by no means is new, and there has been WiFi connectivity in cars for a few years now. Ford are hoping that the added speed of the 4G LTE modem will be enough to separate them from the crowd. We have no idea which cars will include the new modems, but as soon as we do, we will let you know.
