Epic Games announced today that they are launching their very own game platform, and it’s an offer that I can really see developers getting behind.
The founders of the world’s most popular game Fortnite are putting together their own gaming platform, a piece of software that could rival the likes of Steam.
What more, Epic Games are also offering developers a larger piece of the revenue pie, allowing developers to walk away with 88% of the money earned if their game is purchased on their store. This rivals current top dog Steam who currently give developers 70% of the revenue share. Epic Games are leaving themselves with just 12% of the total revenue.
Epic are also allowing developers who build games inside of the Unreal 4 engine a free pass on their royalty fee, offering to cover the cost for them. Likewise, developers who host their titles on Steam have to pay a 5% royalty to Unreal Engine.
To compete with this, Valve has vowed to drop their revenue take to 25% for any games that hit over £10 million worth of revenue. This includes any DLC and in-game purchases too. This however will definitely not be enough for those smaller studios out there, that do not quite hit the £10 million mark.
It’ll be interesting to see how this will effect the industry, as Steam for so long has really monopolised digital game sales on the PC platform.
