Since Xbox gave a pretty good show a couple of days ago at their E3 Press Conference, it was no surprise that Sony was going to try all it could to top the Microsoft console. Games were a big thing for Sony this year, as we’ve all heard information about the PS Pro in the past. So without further a due, let’s get into what Sony had to offer.

Sony kicked off their press conference with some very traditional eastern style music. Chimes, stringed sections, wood instruments and hand drums made up the ensemble, giving a very calm and soothing performance. The waterfall with water projections flowing behind them was just the cherry on top to this amazing opening.

Before we begin I would like to point out that the sound via stream carried an echo, making it quite distracting to what was actually happening on screen. It was almost as if it was being recorded with a microphone from the auditorium speakers.

Not wasting any time, Sony decided to jump straight into a first look at Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. There didn’t seem to be a Drake present, instead showing off a female protagonist to the series. Now I haven’t played a recent Uncharted game, so have no idea who  this is. The game looks pretty impressive, with the action packed adventures following suit to previous titles.

From Uncharted, we jumped straight into a short preview of the new Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds. No idea if this is just an expansion or if Sony are developing a brand new full game, none of that information was disclosed during the conference. Sony did however drop what looked like fake snow onto the crowd, giving their preview an extra sense of immersion. A great subtle feature that only heightens game excitements.

The new Days Gone from Bend Studio was given a large chunk of gameplay. Opening up as a cinematic trailer moving on to what looked like actual footage of gameplay. It featured a man driving a motorbike in what looked like an open world title, being chased down by wolves. After he’s knocked off of his bike by what look like bandits, the character uses some kind of sixth sense to locate “Manny.” Manny’s bike held some clues into what direction he was headed. Days Gone is an action packed zombie survival narrative that will see you attempt to avoid zombie hoards as well as bandit type characters. From what we’ve seen so far, it’s hard to believe that these zombie hoards aren’t pre-planned, rather than a random surprise that you have to escape.

Monster Hunter is back, and this time in glorious 4K goodness. Featuring a man who like to use big weapons, you’re faced with even bigger dinosaur foes. Except at the end of the demo where you’re greeted by a fire-breathing dragon/bird hybrid, which wasn’t very dinosaur like to me. Expect large scale enemies and puzzle sections to figure out, as we saw when the playable character used a whip to pull down a section of cliff onto the dinosaur.

Speaking about scale, BluePoint announced Shadow of the Colossus, although it was unclear on whether it was a remake of the original classic. Shadow of the Colossus was made famous on the Playstation 2, by introducing large giant enemies to the gaming industry. With the original only have I think maybe 10 enemies in the whole game, each enemy required you do to something different to kill it. Climb, jump, and cling on for dear life as you scale the side of these huge monsters.

MArvel Vs. Capcom is back, introducing new characters from the more recent Marvel films, like the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy for example. Marvel Vs Capcom in the past has been a beat em up title. There is some kind of story line coming to this addition is still to be seen, and with the introduction of a new “Story Demo” that’s available to download, it looks as if something like that is coming.

Sony had the honour of introducing the new Call of Duty WWII game during its conference, and it’s one that I reckon Xbox wanted to get their hands on too. Call of Duty returns to its vanilla routes, expanding on historically accurate battles, turning them into chaotic playgrounds of destruction. We saw some winter trenches and street battles during the trailer, as well as them hinting to us that there may be some vehicular combat involved. We’re expecting to see old favorites return like Carentan and Dawnville, yet will they remain the same as us vanilla players remember?

So it was time for the VR titles that Sony are pushing hard, thanks to their new headset. Sony touched upon Skyrim VR as their own VR headset is starting to make waves in the industry. You can find more information about that on our coverage of the Bethesda conference here. They also looked at a new side scroller adventure title which implements the VR platform called Star Child. Although we didn’t see any VR gameplay, it looked very similar to something like Bloody Zombies, the game we checked out at Comic Con earlier this year. The Inpatient was a scary VR horror title. Not much was revealed except what seemed like a mental asylum hospital type backdrop, and a creepy doctor that “only wants what’s best for me.” Monster in the Deep looked like a hyped up fishing simulator that revealed a monster in a lake. Bravo Team was a modern combat simulator that will probably make use of the new VR gun that Sony has launched for FarPoint. Expect street combat, and a whole lot of insurgents to take out. Moss didn’t reveal much except a glowing orb and a mouse. No gameplay at all.

Once the VR segment was over, the auditorium filled with a sudden drum noise, flicking through panning shots of what may be a new console? Not sure if that’s true, as we’ve already seen the PS4 Pro launch but it may be something to combat the new launch of the Xbox One X.

When God of War came on, there was an eruption from the audience. This title is a crowd pleaser and one that many of us can’t wait to get our hands on. The classic hack and slash title has been with us since the dawn of the Playstation 2. This time round, protagonist Kratos has his kid with him. The child is playable, and from what we’ve seen so far, has not had much explanation on who the child actually is. During the reel we were given a sneak peak into the hack and slash combat, a couple of boss battles, what looks like Thor’s hammer, and a whole host of beautiful locations to explore. There was a giant lizard like water creature that the kid could understand too. It’s unclear whether this is open world, but going by previous titles, it probably isn’t and is very corridor based. There was no user-interface either so we have no idea on the things like combat multipliers or whether the magic spells used will use some kind of mana. Expect this game by early 2018.

With a soothing almost choir like opening, this next game came with some anticipation. I wasn’t quite sure what it was, although from first impressions looks very story driven. Marcus, the main guy of the trailer announces to the crowd to rally a mob against the creators of cybernetics. Marcus is the rebel’s leader, and rather being caught in a cliché narrative of humans taking on renegade robots, you are actually part of the robot uprising. The visuals are absolutely stunning, and we were treated to small pockets of what seemed like third person gameplay. Not knowing much about this game, I am definitely looking forward to seeing more on this title. The game is called Detroit: Become Human, and there was no date announced for when it is due.

Destiny 2 turned up with some new gameplay and cinematic trailer reveals, although showed nothing too new than what we had already seen before from the released trailers earlier on over the past month. This game did receive a cheer though, so it is a wanted title. Sony also showed off a number of things like armor, setting locations and power ups that are going to be exclusive to the Playstation version of the game.

The last title we were treated with is another exclusive coming to Playstation 4. Spider Man in 4K looked absolutely amazing. It opened up with a cinematic trailer, and wasted no time jumping into some acrobatic gameplay. This game looks as if it can be approached in various ways. The stealth option sees you wrapping various villains and henchmen in web, to avoid any kind of detection. You could also go in fists first to take out the enemies using hand to hand acrobatic combat. Flip around the screen in full 4K glory, taking on Fisk’s empire. The scale is absolutely huge, and has a ton of interactive environments for you to take advantage of during crucial combat moments. The switch between gameplay and cutscenes is flawless, and makes the game feel like one large movie. The trailer ended with Spider Man soaring through what looked like quite a lively city. A mixture of quick time events as well as movement you controlled yourself makes this a very exciting title indeed. We’re definitely going to be keeping up with this in the future, so keep watch of this space.
