So here’s something to wrap your head around about Lexus. Usually at this time of year we’re all worried about driving to work because the roads are icy. There’s something us Brits feel uneasy about if we feel the rubber underneath us spin while we’re driving along. Not to mention if you put your foot on the brakes and nothing happens. Full panic mode sets in.

But Lexus wanted to try something different. The luxury car brand has teamed up with Hamilton Ice Sculptures to create a set of tyres that can be installed and driven on by the Lexus NX. What? The project is being featured in a television show called ‘A Frozen Christmas’ which is being aired on the Channel 4 on the 28th December 2o15.

It took Lexus and Hamilton Ice Sculptures three months of research design and testing before the wheels could be fitted to the Lexus NX. They even had to deep freeze the car for five days at -30°C before it was driven around London. It looks pretty impressive to tell you the truth.

The NX’s tyres were laser scanned for exact dimension of the alloys and tyres together. They were then crafted into ice sculptures using computer design and control techniques. The results were absolutely stunning. Four sculptors worked on the tyres for 36 hours using nothing but hand-crafted techniques and of course, Japanese chisels among other shaping tools.

The ice was taken from a moving flow to ensure it looked crystal clear when installed onto the Lexus NX. The LED lights really helped to bring out the clarity of the ice.

Richard Balshaw, Lexus Director, said: “Creating Amazing is what Lexus is about. Projects such as our hoverboard, the origami-inspired cardboard car and now a dazzling set of fully functioning ice wheels, demonstrate how we use advanced technologies and the best craftsmanship traditions to achieve outstanding results. That’s not just for eye-catching one-off projects, but for the cars we deliver to our customers, too.”
