DJI are one of the big players, if not the biggest, in the domestic drone market, with their Phantom or Mavic, being the ‘go to’ drones for video footage. They have produced a few drones, all of which have received rave reviews and now, they have released their latest model, the DJI Spark. The Spark is the smallest drone they have made to date, small enough in fact, to put into your coat pocket. Here’s what we know so far about this exciting new drone:

Flight Time: 16 minutes
Transmission Distance: 1.2 miles (2km)
Speed: Upto 50km/h
VPS Range: 30m
Gimbal: 2-Axis
Camera: 1/2.3in CMOS sensor, 1080p, 12mp, f/2.6 wide angle
Price: £519 all in

Just by looking at the spec, I’m pleased to see that there is a mechanical gimbal, be it only 2-Axis (three on the Phantom) as this is the most important factor, for achieving smooth footage. Distance and speed is also good but the flight time could be longer and where’s the 4K capability at?! £519 though, I guess that’s where it’s at.
The size of this drone is incredible! You have probably seen cheap knock offs from China before, with really tiny drones that fit in your hand, fly for five minutes and instantly fall to pieces in the wind, but this looks every bit a professional, durable and well constructed drone, that fits in your hand.

There are several features to this drone that make it that little bit special and these include:
  • Quick Launch – Without even using the app to control it, the drone will recoginse your face and take off at the push of a button, and hover until you are ready to fly.
  • Easy Controls – You can either control the drone via the app or with your hands. Yes, the drone will recognise various commands by performing different gestures with your hands! SO COOL. If you’re feeling lazy, there is also an auto track option, so it will follow you on your every move.
  • Flight Safety – The drone has built in awareness, so it will avoid obstacles such as trees, will return home at the touch of a button and the battery will warn you when its nearly depleted.
I’ve watched a few of the reviews on YouTube today and all of which have been really positive. The price, the image quality, the stability and the control look as if DJI had nailed it. Especialy the fact that it comes in such a small package. You can purchase these now, direct from DJI and if I had a use for one, I would be straight on it.
