I am forever sitting in coffee shops around London, gratefully using their electricity to charge my phone, tablet or laptop. It takes time and I don’t actually like coffee! I purchased the Anker Astro E4 External Battery to solve this problem.

There has been an increase in USB battery packs in the last year, as the demand for portable mobile charging is very high, but they don’t just charge mobile phones. The Anker Astro E4 will charge any USB device with a current rating up to 3amps This typically covers all mobile phones, tablets, iPads, Chromebooks and some small laptops. This model comes with two USB charging outlets and a USB mini input to charge the battery itself. The design is sleek and modern, with its shiny black exterior and vibrant blue LED indicator lights.

You can plug two devices to the battery pack simultaneously and both will be charged at the same rate. On test, it takes just over an hour to charge an iPhone from 0% upto 100% and the battery will hold enough charge for four full iPhone charges. I have also charged my Chromebook with it from 0% up to 100% but this took a little longer at 90 minutes, due to the additional power demand. The 13000mAh pack itself is charged via mains electricity with a mini USB plug (not supplied) and takes up to six hours for a full charge. There are four indicator lights that light up, four blue lights indicating a full 100% charge, with a single blinking light indicating there is less than 5% battery charge remaining, plus set points in between. One final addition to the pack is a warm white LED torch, incase you ever need to use it in the dark!

The product is well built and the batteries inside are high quality LG cells but you need to be prepared for its size and weight, you would defiantly notice it if it was in your pocket! Its size is 150 x 62 x 22mm and weighs just shy of 300 grams. If you consider the amount of battery power that is inside this relatively small box, you can appreciate its weight. I carry mine around in a bag with my Chromebook and documents and didn’t notice any significant increase in weight, after adding the battery.

Overall this product is superb. It does exactly what it says on the tin and does it very well. It’s well built, comes with a lengthy 18 month warranty and I’m told it should last for several years before the batteries fail.
